Volume 1 of Lord of the Mysteries is a deeply immersive introduction to one of the most unique fantasy worlds in modern fiction. Written by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, it blends steampunk, horror, and mystery into a setting that feels both eerie and intellectually engaging.
What makes this first volume stand out is its deliberate pacing, rather than rushing into action, it carefully builds atmosphere, lore, and tension. Some readers may find the beginning slow, but patience pays off as the pieces start to connect. One of the strongest aspects of Volume 1 is its world-building. It shows an immersive world that really felt real to me as a new reader. The power system, centered around “Beyonder” potions, is refreshingly structured due to and instead of typical fantasy tropes, the story leans into investigation and deduction akin to its name. Klein himself is a compelling protagonist, cautious, analytical, and very relatable. His inner monologues and decision-making process make readers feel involved in unraveling the mysteries alongside him. However, this novel isn’t without faults. The dense terminology can be very overwhelming at times. Additionally, readers expecting fast-paced action may struggle with the methodical storytelling process.
Overall, Volume 1 serves as a strong foundation. It prioritizes atmosphere, intrigue, and setup over instant action, which ultimately enhances the payoff in later arcs.
